Pass it along — it’s free, and it might be exactly what a family you know is searching for right now.

What’s on it

  • Care now and what it costs, with who pays each part: your parent, Medicare, Medicaid, the VA, insurance or the family
  • Your parent’s monthly picture: income, other costs, the gap, and how long savings would last
  • Programs to check, from the State Health Insurance Assistance Program to PACE, VA benefits, long-term care insurance and tax help
  • Room for notes

How to use it

Update it whenever care changes.

Count VA or other payments once, either as income or as an amount covered, not both. Talk with an elder law attorney before your parent gives away money or transfers property.

Where it comes from

This tool comes from Chapter 10, “Who Pays for What,” of When Mom or Dad Can No Longer Manage Alone by Mark Duda. The chapter covers who pays for care: Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, insurance and private pay.
